Some elements that in previous work, listed here like pick-n-mix REMIX for design project inspiration:
This is a form of FREEWRITING… (with a bit of SCHOLARLY RESEARCH under “comparison”… it just happpened…).
-
Media: audio, video, musical score, graphical score, laban notation, speech, music, melody, rhythm, written work, logos
- also possibly: harmony?
-
Domains: music, dance, climbing, foreign languages, drumming, graphic design
- furniture? urban design? fashion?
-
Digital forms: binary, midi, text (words, ascii…). Video / images. Vectors (SVG)
-
modulators: random, goal seeking, goal swapping, combination, human mind, misinterpretation / approximation, Google Magenta
-
Agents: User (human). Google Magenta. Other people and their ideas (youtube / those lawyers who wrote down every possible melody)
-
comparison: either by measure of distance (AI? Prob distribution? see for example http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~athens/cs507/Projects/2003/IanRatzer/ and https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13735-013-0036-6) or by human judgement? (Interesting idea at https://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/id/eprint/60255/1/Full_paper.pdf that similarity is in part interpretive =>we can do a game of trying to make two dissimilar things similar, to create novelty / remixes)
-
Iteration: can be done in real time…
-
Branching: do we allow user choice? How much?
-
combination: given two elements, combine them (like in evolutionary algorithm??)
-
Tech: Google Magenta, React, parcel, open processing / P5
-
Users: jazz students, bored toddlers, dancers, poets, writers, graphic designers, customers of graphic designers, people who can’t dress properly. Piano teachers who don’t give lessons until the previous lesson’s stuff is mastered. Musicians who want to learn to play by ear instead of using score, because it’s more fun. Musicians who want to do the opposite, because they need jobs.
Given this, we can try to generate new ideas.:
- e.g. Google Magenta used to create new furniture… based on combinations of existing forms… like going to Ikea and breeding stuff (c.f. Crufts dog show)
- E.G. we can create random variations on musical phrases between a simple one a pianist can play and a complex one they can’t
- or a similar idea with harmonic development: compare with Adam Neely’s 7 levels of jazz harmony: start with very basic chords then build up.
- Create website where same starting idea diverges under inflence of different artists: e.g. maybe the artists can’t see each other’s work, but the end user can: see how they thing.
- this is not dissimilar to replaying chess matches, but more creative…
- Automatic graphic designer: make these annoying creatives unnecessary. Just input some elements and click a few times on what you prefer and you’ll iterate towards something good.
- Create a tool for helping musicians learn to play by ear. Make stuff progressively develop (from known to unknown, easy to hard, bach to mozart, like that happy birthday varation. Use Google Magenta to do the work (plus a measure of similarity… how??)
I think the last idea is the most feasible, given my past work and time available!
